I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book from Harper Collins International and boy was i not ready for the ride! When i read the summary of this book i knew i had to read it, mostly because it is so NOT my type of book, and ive been wanting to read outside of my comfort zone for a while now, and also because ive never read anything that involves twins, murder and blackmail.
The subject is pretty straight forward, Joy has no idea what happened last night, she remembers being angry, she remembers wanting Adam dead, but she wouldnt be capable, she couldnt, she doesn't know what happened but somehow Adam is dead, the school is a mess and her head is a blur, she would do anything to protect her twin sister Grace, but she would never be capable of this much, right?
Joy and Grace tho similar in appearance they couldn't be more different, their relationship is both obsessive and protective, a kinda love that comes too close with hatred and jealousy. I was captured by both of them, by their depths as characters, honestly Laura did an amazing job because i could relate to either of them at so many points and even tho this book deals with INTENSE subjects it was still handled with a rawness that you cannot help but identify with.
The characters are so well constructed, you can completely understand how deep their relationship is and how deep this issue has scarred them, not only with their sisterhood but as individuals. I also liked the way the secondary characters came into place, they have a meaning and a background, even the parents, you get a pretty good idea of how everyday goes for these two girls and the kind of people they have to deal with at their age.
I started with a pretty good idea of who was the one blackmailing Joy, then i had no idea and by the end of the book i was just relieved because it just made SO much sense. Glad i finally started reading outside my comfort zone and this was a great book to start with!
Things i love: I like reading from both points of view, it was so interesting to see each girls mind, yes they are twins but they are completely different and getting to read the past and present with their different perceptions was really cool.
Things i didn't love: A few times i got a bit frustrated with the deep obsession they both have with each other, i think Laura tried to point out how strong a sisterly bond can be but all it did for me was confuse me about their intentions in general. Also by the middle of the story it got a bit predictable, but the ending made it worth it.
